If you are flying in, it’s pretty easy to get here from SFO or even OAK airports via the BART. The walk to my house from BART is just 8½ blocks from the BART station at 16th & Mission Street. It’s about an 18 minute casual walk, I’ve done it in 11 minutes with a backpack and suitcase.

If you want to avoid the longer walk, you can shorten the walk to 2.5-3.5 blocks by transferring to Muni at Civic Center Station

Check the BART website for schedules and fares. Fare using a Clipper Card at this writing SFO to 16th/Mission is $9.10, $9.20 to Civic Center. OAK to Civic Center BART is $10.45, $10.55 to 16th/Mission.  Paying cash with a paper ticket will cost you $0.50 surcharge on every ride.  At SFO, you can buy a clipper card at the airport at the arrivals level of each domestic terminal.   Look for Airport Information booth located on Arrivals Level on Level 1

If you arrive at SJC, you are kinda screwed as it is about 60-90 minutes south by car, about 2½ hours by public transport. If you are not on a late arrival, you can get a bus to the San Jose CALTRAIN station and take the train to SF, or a bus to the Fremont BART station, then to Civic Center, then take the Muni to Castro Station or if on J-Church line, 20th/Church Streets. Best check maps.google.com for options.

Note: If you are arriving on Highway 101 from the North, the Golden Gate Bridge is electronic toll only.  If you do not have a FastTrak responder, you can pay online before crossing or within 48 hours after you cross the bridge online at the FasTrak® website.  Note: If you are in a rental car and opt to be billed, your rent car agency will charge an additional “convenience fee” to process the payment.  Depending on the length of your rental, this fee can far exceed the cost of crossing the bridge.
